If you really want to learn about the Amish and what it’s like to leave the Amish, a great place to start is reading blogs by Amish (some progressive communities allow computers) and ex-Amish writers. On this page I will show a list of some of these blogs. Be sure to favorite the page as I will be adding to the list as time goes on. If you know of a relevant blog that is not listed, please leave a comment with the link and I will add it to the list.
Please be respectful of these writers. Many of them are not atheist like I am and some of them are beginning writers.
Here they are, not in any particular order:
- About Amish – by Saloma Furlong
- Project 365 – by Katie Troyer
- Pinecraft Sarasota – by Katie Troyer
- Growing Up Amish – Anna Dee Olson
- The Literary Party: The Poetic Life and Times of James Schwartz
- Ex Amish Gal
- Amish in the City Mose – Mose Gingerich
- Ira’s Writings – Ira Wagler
- A Joyful Chaos – Mary Ann Kinsinger
- Amish Descendant Scholarship Fund
- Der Reggeboge Freindschaft – Joseph Stalnaker
I am a descendent of Amish settlers in Ohio nad Indiana, and was a member of the Old German Baptist Brethren (an Old Order group very similar to Amish) I was excommunicated for being gay and I host a blog of encouragement for others who have experienced similar rejection.

Great blog — it’s great hearing secular perspectives from an Amish background. I’m from Southwest Michigan, an area with a high Amish population. Although I obviously can’t relate to your story, I’m also an atheist (as well as a Kindist) who was raised in a fundamentalist Christian family.
Anyway, I just “followed” your blog . . . keep it up!
Hello, I am sending adress of another wonderful blog written by an ex-amish
http://ajoyfulchaos.blogspot.cz/
Thank you! I have added it the list.
Jacob Hertzler (1st Amish Bishop from the old country) was my Grandfather 6 generations ago. Joseph Hertzler is my Grandfather who let his children get educated. I think that is when my family left the Amish. I believe where ever you are in
your believes that is great !
