Jeremiah Raber is one of the main characters on TLC’s new drama show Breaking Amish. On the show Jeremiah is portrayed as being Amish and experiencing life outside of the Amish for the first time. That is not true.
Jeremiah Hasn’t Been Amish for Years:
By some accounts, Jeremiah hasn’t been Amish for up to 14 years. Link
Jeremiah’s Myspace page has been deleted but by using Google’s page cache, we can still see it here, and here. Notice the picture thumbnails dating back to March 5, 2007 in which he isn’t dressed Amish.
If the links provided above don’t work for you, open the images below to see the cached Myspace pages I’m referring too. After clicking on a thumbnail, click “View full Size” and then click the picture and you should see the full-sized version.
Luckily for us, Jeremiah hadn’t set his Myspace profile to ‘private’. Note the children in several of the images are they his? Update: At the request of the mother, I have censored the pictures of the children. My deepest apologies go to her if I caused her any distress. I also censored the pictures of other people, since this page isn’t about them and there’s no reason to cause stress for them.
Divorce Records for Jeremiah Raber:
On February 10, 2011, Jeremiah’s wife filed for divorce against him, charging extreme cruelty and gross neglect of duty in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They had been married since February 27, 2005 and have three children. To see the court documents for yourself, go here and do a search for Last Name: Raber, and First Name: Jeremiah.
The Amish generally don’t accept back into the fold those that are divorced. So the scene in the first episode of Breaking Amish where Jeremiah tells his “girlfriend” that he’s leaving for New York, must be staged. If the girlfriend really was Amish, she would not be allowed to date Jeremiah. I’m just speculating here but possibly she is ex-Amish and an aspiring actress.
Even before the divorce case, Jeremiah was embroiled in custody and child support issues. Those court records can be found here by doing a search for Last Name: Raber, and First Name: Jeremiah.
Given all the above, is it any wonder that TLC didn’t reveal Jeremiah’s last name? Or that he had to delete his MySpace and Facebook profiles? His Facebook name used to be “Rebel Amish”. Now that page can’t be found. Update Sept. 21, 2012: It looks like the Facebook page is back online but using a different name.
You are correct. I’m from the same community he is but don’t know him personally. I know people who do however and your sleuthing payed off. The whole thing is a farce.
I am the mother of the three children in the pictures u posted. I ask of u to kindly remove them. U are entitled to expose this scandal in anyway u wish but by posting pictures of my kids is in fact illegal. Thank u for your cooperation.
I am so sorry for any distress I have caused you. I have censored the images to hide the children’s faces. I also censored pictures and comments by people other than Jeremiah. My intention with this page was to show how Breaking Amish is misrepresenting the truth. My intention was not to cause any stress to innocent parties and I apologize once more for doing that.
Not illegal, lady, sorry. Learn the Internet.
Kara, regardless of whether it is legal or illegal, there is a certain degree of common decency and respect regarding children and general posting of photos that every person should observe, with emphasis on respect, which you appear to lack. Ms Stutzman requested that the photos of her children be removed which xamishatheist did with a sincere apology (unlike your glib “sorry”).
If you are looking for more titillation than is offered here, or are looking for something of a prurient nature, I suggest visiting another site where the rights of parents to monitor the images of their children is completely disregarded.
BTW, it is illegal to post children’s photos or anything that could identify them without the consent of the custodial parent. The US, Canada, Australia and numerous other countries have enacted laws to protect children.
Jeremiah….. Whether you are a fake “Amish” or not… You are in the OPINION of MANY YOUNG “ENGLISH” WOMEN..A Nasty little turd!! I know that U know that “English” word!! And I sure HOPE you have enough Sense to figure it out… Buddy, you had BETTER go back to that PRETTY little girl you left on the farm!! (and I feel so SORRY for her if you so choose!! unless you have a BIG CHANGE OF HEART TOWARDS WOMEN!!!)… But like I said, you are a LITTLE messed up grill(BAD TEETH) nasty fingernailed. BAD BREATH LOOKING,..little turd!!! Just because you put on “ENGLISH CLOTHES” that DOES NOT CHANGE WHATS UNDER THOSE CLOTHES!! Strip Club… REALLY??!! GROSS!! I AM A FINE,YOUNG ENGLISH WOMAN!! But in MY WHOLE LIFE…I DO NOT KNOW …ONE ..MAN…WHO HAS EVER, … EVER…BEEN IN A STRIP CLUB!!! so GROSS!!!! Did you EVEN SHOWER,OR BRUSH YOUR TEETH BEFORE????!…AND BELIEVE ME!!! YOU ARE NOT in ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION..IN THE LEAGUE OF MOST of the WOMEN,YOU THINK WOULD EVER EVEN LOOK “ONCE”AT YOU!!! . You just are WAY OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE DUDE!!!…. At least Abe looks clean,AND HAS some MANNERS!! AT LEAST HIS TEETH,& FINGERNAILS look CLEAN!!! Take a LESSON OR TWO FROM HIM!! DON’T BE SOOOO GROSS!!! TAKE A SHOWER. BRUSH YOUR TEETH!! LEARN SOME RESPECT FOR WOMEN!! LEARN SOME MANNERS!! And then you can DARE to think ANY ENGLISH WOMAN,would want you!! PS. I do think it is SO sad how your “Amish Religion”,Shows NO LOVE!! Especially when Jesus said; they will know we ARE His,because of our LOVE!! I mean!!! I hug,and kiss my BIG Sons EVERY DAY!! That to me is so sad…. I DO hope you find yourself!! And are not SO FULL OF YOURSELF!!!
Actually it is not illegal if it was taken from a public page set up by a parent or guardian. By posting it in a public forum you give up your rights to privacy
Actually YOU are wrong Brandi. The copyright of photos belongs to the person who took or originally owns the photos, in this case the mother, and whether they are posted in a public forum (which I am assuming you mean Facebook) or not, she is the owner of those photos and legally no one can copy those photos without her express permission. This is why everyone should have a copyright blurb on their FB page or personal blog that no copying is permitted without the owner’s consent and that there is no implied consent. Lack of notice does not imply consent.
Further, there are specific laws both in the US and in other countries that prohibit the posting of photos of children except by their custodial parent, so even if someone else took the photos, they cannot be published without the express permission of the custodial parent, again no implied consent. These laws were enacted to help combat child pornographers.
Facebook has run into this problem numerous times, and if requested by the owner of the photos, FB will ask the person who copied the photos to remove them. If they do not comply, FB can and will remove them itself or shut down that particular page.
Regardless of any law, when someone is requested by a parent (or anyone else for that matter) to remove photos of his/her children from a site, or to blur their faces, why wouldn’t you? It is, after all, the morally correct action to take.
Iv known him since he was 18 and he was not Amish them. He got married then divorced because he physically beat his wife. So they got divorced and he became homeless . Living in his car and stealing to make a living I’m pretty sure he currently has a warrant out for him in Sugarcreek ohio
You’re not the first person I’m hearing these things from. That man does not have a good reputation among the Amish and ex-Amish that I know.
Thank you for the cooperation! Concerning the rest of your post I see that our feelings are mutual!! You hit the nail in the head!
I’m Jewish and in an urban environment… so my knowledge of the Amish community is limited to popular media, documentaries, and reading. That being said, a few things in the first episode struck me as not genuine:
Chief among them is that the kids are “planning” their leave with the cameras on them. They are getting ready to “break the news” to their family that they are leaving. Meanwhile, the camera crew is following these kids for a couple days beforehand. Is an Amish community, which generally shuns photography, going to open up the community to a full camera crow to do a TLC series on kids leaving the community to get all crazy in NYC? I’m guessing no.
In the episode, the “Bishops” daughter is shown packing her bags after she was supposedly kicked out of the house weeks ago. If her father, the Bishop, is as strict and paternalistic as the show makes him out to be, would he really let a full camera crew into the house to film this?
Ive only seen previews of this show but couldn’t that possibly be a reenactment of what they’ve been through? :S

There is anothe cast member who is being less than honest. This person worked for my family, drove a car, worked at a bar and left the community well before filming. In fact, the first time I saw this person in amish clothes was on the show. This is a not so real reality show.
If you have any pictures or documents that support your assertion, or if you have any information that might help me uncover those documents, you should send me an email at xamishatheistATgmailDOTcom
abe and rebbeca aren’t amish either they have been gone for 3years and have a baby. rebbeca is still married to someone else. they live in the same town and i know her family. this is such a joke.
Yes, I know… I posted about this the other day; https://xamishatheist.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/update-on-breaking-amish-the-scandal/
I wish I could find marriage documents on Rebecca. If you have pictures or other documents showing Abe and Rebecca after they left the Amish, you should mail them to xamishatheistATgmailDOTcom
How can the picture on the link you provide be Rebecca. Rebecca on the show has false teeth. The woman in that picture has real teeth [notice the gap in her teeth on her left side]?
LMFAO are you serious right now?
Wow! You can tell its her and also tell her teeth looked horrible to boot! She may have gotten them pulled after this picture or had some hand me down dentures lol but wow!
Are you really that stupid??
tlc paid abes mom to be in the show in the scene with his bother who isn’t amish either and has been in jail. i watched the show and couldn’t believe they were acting like its real. that wasn’t rebecca’s grandpa and it wasn’t his house and they don’t shun her. rebecca married a amish guy and they left the amish abe went with them. rebecca and abe hooked up and moved back to pa their kid is a year and a half old. tlc knew who they were and i wish someone would expose them
It’s pretty obvious just by seeing the first two episodes that these are not sheltered people with little exposure to the outside English world. The way they talk gives it away. They have been around the outside world for years, you can tell. They do a terrible job of acting otherwise. Every single one is a fake and I knew it before I even saw this link.
After watching two minutes of this show, I wasn’t buying it. Like you, the language gave it away for me. I don’t know much about amish, but I’m pretty sure “freakin” isn’t a steady part of their vocab. Sure enough, the trusty internet confirmed that this is completely fake. I’ve worked on set for a few reality shows, and big shock! Most of them are faked to this extreme.
I thought the same thing about the language. “freakin”. Not in the Amish dictionary. Also other words that have been bleeped out. Amish would never know or speak those words. This is a fake and I knew it before it even aired. Amish would have no part of a camera crew following them around.
First off I agree this show is fake, but I disagree that amish kids do not know bad language. I live close to an amish community and I grew up playing with some of the kids and they actually taught me my first bad word.
Well, you really can’t tell from the language of the “kids”. (not talking about the jerk Jeramiah… he looks like he’s about 50 and is VERY ignorant, and arrogant, without reason! LOL) but I’ve seen the Amish kids swear and smoke and do a lot of things behind their parents backs… just as other kids do… especially when parents keep them held down with too many rules.
The Amish aren’t completely sheltered from the world. The kids know quite a bit of what’s happening out in the world. Oftentimes, driving behind a buggy in PA, the teens will give you the finger, thinking it’s funny. They can be very defiant. (Just like the preacher’s daughter or son in other communities. They get wild.
Oops… I didn’t see ‘countrygirl’s’ comment… LOL…. I replied under it and I agree with her wholeheartedly. I’ve witnessed the same thing. They know bad words just as other teens do… and because of their strict boundaries, some use those words ALL of the time!!! I agree some of this is fake, but they also are allowed to decide if they want to leave the Amish at the age of 18… they can get as wild as they want (sow their wild oats) and either go back to the community or not.
I can’t believe what hypocrites many of you are. The TLC Breaking Amish is about education. Who cares if he he left several years ago. What right do all of you have to take away these young people’s freedom of Choice!
This is a show that is based on lies, so where is the hypocrisy? Breaking Amish is not educating anyone, it is using people who have already left their communities, some for years, and saying they are just now leaving, paying big bucks to put them up in an upscale hotel in Manhattan – we’re taking $300+ a night. These young people made their choices years ago.
If you believe this show is reality, I have some ocean front property in Arizona you may be interested in.
It’s not about “freedom of choice.” It’s about a reality show that portrays something as real when in fact, it is false. If that is what you want for education, it is no wonder that people today are so easily fooled.
Educational….Really?…..What are they teaching?…Bad language, disrespecting your parents, just to name a few…No Thanks!
To say that TLC is giving us an ‘education’ is ridiculous and THIS post on THIS website proves it. I happened on this website, like many here, because we knew there was something a-mis in the show and we were right. This website gives you far more of an education that TLC (the Learning Channel… yeah! Right!) If they want to educate us about the Amish then they should make a REAL documentary with REAL people telling the TRUTH. They didn’t do that. Instead they chose to use people who’ve been out of the community for quite some time and allowed them to ‘pretend’ to be leaving the community. So, TLC either fooled us on purpose just to get an audience, or they didn’t do much fact checking on the participants of this so-called “reality show”. Either way, it’s wrong and very disappointing.
Maybe they would have had a good program just by telling the TRUTH about these people, instead of dressing them up in Amish clothing and making up a story. The only education I got was NOT to believe TLC!!
I also think they are exploiting many people under the guise of “education”. We know how it ruined lives in Kate Plus Eight or whatever that was… and I think “The Little People” show is exploitation also. Dangling money in front of people just to exploit them for entertainment is wrong!
Glad I found this website, though… very informative! Thanks, xamishatheist!!
This show is a total joke. I too was put off by the language. I did live for a few months in PA and have been around some Amish. If it were in fact real, I would think it would be really bad on TLC’s part because it almost seems like the intent is for them to lure these people away. However, I am just not buying any of it. Seems totally scripted.
Agreed. It has to be fake. I knew True Amish who don’t have tv don’t say “like” every other word or “frickin”
If its honna be fake then get a dialogue coach.
Thanks for exposing this. I think if I were Amish I would probably be offended by this representation (of course if I were really Amish I’d never know- guess that’s what they are counting on!)
It did seem a bit odd, the way they all spoke; so in sync with the way the rest of us speak; after reading this, I guess I know WHY it was that way. Watch the episode of “An Idiot Abroad – Season Two” where Karl visits an Amish family; overall, their demeanor was a stark contrast to that of the kids on this show. Very interesting site you’ve got here — thank you for pulling the lid off of this show and backing it up with as much evidence as you can get your hands on. What a disappointment; I was actually looking forward to seeing their side of things and learning about the Amish community.
Watch BBC’s Amish: A Secret Life, or NatGeo’s Amish: Out of Order for more accurate representations of the Amish.
I think it’s very obvious those “kids” left the Amish way before the show, I’m not Amish but they way they were speaking was obviously slang. And while I like the character Jeremiah as he is portrayed, I did wonder why this guy was 32 years old and just now “leaving”. TLC should fire their producers, they could have had just as good a show by finding true young Amish people who have left their homes and told their stories. Not to mention the fact that if people would just pay attention they can see its all scripted….seriously, Rebecca’s grandfather shut the door in her face yet the camera pans from inside the house. Geez. Anyway, I like the show for entertainment purposes but reading just how fake it is is a turn off. That wasn’t Rebecca’s grandfather or his house? Abe and Rebecca have a kid? Ugh. Now they are just liars.
My wife noticed the camera shot from inside the house also. Many people recognize Kate as she was a bartender at Ruby Tuesdays in the Lebanon/Lancaster area. You will also see that she got a dwi in Florida, because she had a drivers license, because she has been driving for years. You wiull laso notice her accent, not very PA Dutch, but we knew her and she was a very nice girl, stuck in the wrong world.
Thanks for validating what I’ve thought since the first show. The first thing that struck me was the camera crew following people, then these “kids,” supposedly without anything but the clothes on their backs jump into a black SUV, get on a plane to La Guardia that doesn’t have anyone else on it, when they could have easily taken a train from PA. Then they check into a high priced hotel in Manhattan, where Abe gets a $52 breakfast? Is he that stupid he can’t read the room service prices? And where is the money coming from to pay for the hotel and everything else? Then there is the immediate tension between the girls, Rebecca being shown as real bitchy toward Kate, putting everyone on notice that she’s got her eye on Abe, and the others drinking wine like they’ve been doing it all their lives.
But the language is a dead giveaway for me. Rebecca is like, always saying, like, like. In the second episode Jeremiah asks Abe about women in NYC and Abe replies “mostly skanks.” Where would he even learn that word if he had just come from a closed society such as the Amish and where would Rebecca pick up that ubiquitous way of speaking, every other word being “like”?
Obviously fake everything. Seriously, how stupid does TLC think viewers are?
They KNOW how stupid viewers are – case in point: Honey Boo Boo.
I was born and raised in Lancaster County. I am now 60 years old, so I’ve been around for a while. Young Amish men and women do not use “English” slang. From the first time I heard one of the actors use English slang and realized that none of the actors had even the slightest trace of an Amish accent.
I once “dated” an Amish woman. We went bicycling on our dates. We went to see “Witness”. Fannie said the movie was total nonsense where the Amish were concerned. I wonder what she would say about this “unreal” reality show !
If she was Amish what was she doing in a movie theater seeing “witness”?
Amish youth do at times attend movie theaters if they live close or have an easy way to get there. It would be considered a Rumspringa thing.

For one thing, the “Amish” people don’t call themselves Amish. They have another name for their church.

Iva’s facebook page… Jeremiah’s girlfriend who NEVER lived in Ohio. She was formerly Amish, but hasn’t been for years!
Good catch!
She had deactivated her FB for about a month but is back on now. She was cast in the role as Jeremiah’s gf and filmed all her scenes inLancaster, PA in late spring. She is ex-Amish, having left the order almost 3 years ago. She’s isn’t an actress, just a college student who needed money and could speak PA Dutch and looked the part.

Soaking up the fame
This link unfortunately is not working for some reason… But the previous one does! You can clearly see it is her!
Nope, previous one doesn’t work anymore either. 😦
Thanks for exposing this..people are so quick to accept stuff like this as truth. I knew better the second I heard about the show. I have personal experience leaving a mennonite group.
The girl from Lancaster, Pa mispronounced the name of the town…a dead giveaway for me.
I am from a few towns away from Lancaster. If I remember correctly, Sabrina correctly pronounces “Lancaster” as it is said in PA. In other states, I have noticed people say “LAN-caster” but in PA we say “LANK-A-STUR”. So she pronounced it correctly.
I too, thought things seemed a bit off. First giveaway was the film crew on the premises, I thought that was a big no no. Then, was the luggage they all seemed to own and Rebecca’s purse with the hand sanitizer obviously bought at Bath and Body Works, because I own that same carrier on my purse. Last was the language. I felt they spoke “too modern”. The show is entertaining, I’ll give it that. That’s the primary purpose, be entertaining, gain viewers, gain advertisers, gain revenue.
LMAO [bath&body works sanitizer] i love that
I was born in Gap, Pa (Lancaster County) and have tons of Amish friends. My family and I travel from Georgia to visit them every year. Though I completely agree that this show is complete crap and is doing a huge disservice to the incredible Amish community, I can promise you that they DO shop at Bath and Body Works. In fact, it is one of their favorite stores to visit each year when we go up to go Christmas shopping together. They love the soaps and lotions just as much as we do…hand sanitizer too!
And also note that some of the Amish around the country run stores and other types of establishments that have them interacting with the English. You are bound to pick up on some modern or slang from visitors like we pick up unusual things from other people. They aren’t locked in cages! When they do venture out to shop for certain things/times they do see us acting like we do lol people amuse me with their thinking of the Amish way of life. Its like the Hutterites, now that they were on tv everyone thinks that all Hutterites are the same even though that have strict colonies and more lenient colonies just like the Amish have.
This show annoyed me just as much as the “All American Muslim ” show and I’m a Muslim, lol. Tlc needs to get their crap together and stop saying stupid shows.
Gotta love auto correct. I meant “playing” stupid shows. Whatever -_-
When I heard Abe say the New York woman are skanky I knew this wasn’t real, Im from Arcola Illinois, very large Amish population and no cameras would have been let anywhere near any of the houses, I know this for a fact.
I do agree with you that this show is completely fake, however living in lancaster county I do know that the amish in this area are much much more lenient with the “English” technology. It is entirely possible that the crew is using a real amish community for their reenactment.

not one person is real on this show except abe’s mom and they paid her to go to new york to bring him back. they don’t show abe and rebecca’s baby it was there in new york with them. tlc is acting like they didn’t know. i heard about them filming a show from my amish friends that live in that community. i wonder if abe took them for a ride in his truck.
Abe’s mom’s house has a ceiling fan in the dining room…
From what I have researched there are a lot of differences in different communities. I know some have certain kinds of power generators, its not the things we would use, I honestly can’t think of the name I have heard/been told in the past. But some of them allow things like those to run business’ and things in the home. I don’t think they all sit by candles to have light in the room.
At least in tonight’s episode, he admits to having been kicked out of the Amish community three times, but the show still seems completely fake.
I’m really tired of every reality show being fake and staged. I think the tv stations know we are fascinated with the Amish and they’ll do anything to give it to us, but when they try and contact actual Amish, they want nothing to do with it. So the producers take what they can get, which in this case seems to be people who are very loosely defined as Amish. T
hese are real people trying to live pious lives as they see fit. They’re not Amish for our amusement! I am somewhat embarrassed that I am so curious about them. They’ve become almost like celebrities, with everyone wanting to pry into every facet of their lives, and yet they are the last ones to seek fame for themselves.
“They’re not Amish for our amusement” … Well put
When I say these are real people, etc., I’m referrig to the *real* Amish, not those on the show.
I live in Lancaster county and grew up and have lived amoung the Amish, Wenger Mennonites, Black Bumpers, Pikers, 35er’s etc. My dad’s cousins are Pikers. My grandpop, thank God, left the pike church. TLC is so fake. they need to stop with the crazy shows they have on. so many things on the show that do not make sense to me, because I grew up in Lancaster county, but to those that do not know the difference they think its real.
OK Debbie, now you have my piqued my interest. What are Black Bumpers, Pikers, 35er’s? I googled the phrases but got beyond bizarre results.
They may have been on an extended Rumspringa before the show began.
No. Marriage and subsequent divorce are not part of Rumspringa.
I’m very glad that on the latest episode, Jeremiah was shown mentioning that he had been “kicked out” three previous times, and that he’s worn “English” clothing before. I would venture a guess that being kicked out of anything is different than choosing to leave. He was also re-quoted as saying that he’d always dreamed about driving. Well, I’m sure he DID always dream of driving until he did it! Whether the first time was fourteen years ago or whenever this show was taped, what’s wrong with saying that?
Jeremiah: I am not Amish but a tattoo is a low class thing to do. You are scum. Go smoke crack and become a real ghetto scumbag pimp. You have hit the bottom of the sewer.
Watching the third episode toight Jeremiah implies he was getting his first tatoo. ANyone who has seen a tatoo getting done will realize he was getting a touch up. ALso later in the show when he reveals it to the others it has no swelling at all!, whereas a short time before it has swelling when he is at the parlour! There are so many things that make you realize he is not th eperson he insinuates. Alos he has 3 kids and3 names on his tatoo….
I like the show even if parts of it aren’t real. I like the characters too!
I decided to look up info on the show bc it didn’t feel real to me from what I have looked into about the Amish over the years. I went to the facebook page and was amused that the account shows that he has voted on polls for the show, and of course he has voted himself as a favorite character and cast member. I think it is a shame to the Amish communities to have things like this put on the air. Amish out of order was real and touching and taught many viewers about the culture, this show was not planned well, researched well, or even promoted as it should have been. I’m glad you have brought the issues on these people to the world.
I don’t know if anyone else remembers Jeremiah says I think in the first or second episode that he has been kicked out of the Amish a few times and has dressed English before which could explain the MySpace photos.
Hello…
Watched my first episode of breaking Amish last night … When I saw the beginning .. There was Jeremiah Raber..crazy … I’ve always told my wife about ..working at an Amish cheese factory in millersburg,Oh ..I worked night shift for six months .Four guys, and about ten women..some Amish some jumped the fence already as they call it ..Jeremiah was one of them..drove a mustang 5.0 to work..wore regular clothes..had his tongue pierced..and I really think he had a tattoo already..anyway I just never would have thought out of all the people I Ever met ..I would see him on a reality show ..I thought maybe he went back to being Amish ..any way just thought I could fill you in a little…and if Jeremiah reads this ..what up it’s Carl ….!
In the latest episode, there’s a scene where the cast are in a bar and a drunk Kate is crying. I thought it was interesting that Jeremiah made the comment “those tears are the real deal. She’s really upset” (or something along those lines). He was smiling as he said it, looking at someone beyond the camera (cameraman? Producer?) If the show weren’t fake, why wouldn’t we believe she was really crying? Also, the scene with Abe and his siblings. His bro and sister were telling him he’d be shunned, but they can’t seem to keep a straight face when reciting their lines. Lots of moments like that in the show.
